A Tour of the Eclipse Technologies: Equinox, SWT, RCP and more!
Eclipse (www.eclipse.org) is mostly known as an open source project dedicated to providing a robust platform for Developing highly integrated tools. The platform itself consists of a couple of key technologies (Equinox, SWT, scalable plug-in model, RCP, ...) which can be used as stand-alone components as well. This talk gives an overview on these technologies and how they can be used for application development in various industries.
Inside Eclipse: The Platform and the Process
This talk opens by describing the history, the characteristics of its open source model and the platform architecture of Eclipse. Next it sheds light onto the Eclipse development process by exploring the practices used by the Eclipse team to ship quality software on time. These practices include iterative development, the planning process, and the end-game. The talk provides many insights on how things are done - including the development mantras "Always Beta", "Milestones First", "API First", "Finishing" and "Consume your own output".

The design, development, and deployment of modern technical systems is a complex and many-faceted problem that cannot be adequately solved unless it is supported by suitable computer-based tooling. In addition to core design tools, it requires a full eco-system of mutually complementary and compatible tools. This includes, among others, tools for product and project management, requirements capture, process guidance, design analysis, verification, documentation, configuration management, etc. In this presentation, we first outline the Rational's strategic direction for the technical systems domain and then describe the key components of that strategy. Two fundamental pillars of the chosen strategy are reliance on open standards, to ensure compatibility and extensibility, and an emphasis on governance, to ensure a comprehensive and consistent product strategy which delivers products that fulfill actual customer needs.

Open source software has changed large parts of the software industry landscape in a few period. Products produced by large organizations such as the Eclipse Foundation or the Apache Software Foundation are used worldwide by millions of people and included in thousands of commercial products.
This talk will introduce the origins of open source software and its mains achievements, and explain why no company using or developing software can't ignore the opensource movement. We will present the ecosystem that exists around open source software : the benefits for users, the risks and oppotunities for software vendors.
Finally, we will explain we will explain how Anyware Technologies, from a simple user, has become a major contributor to several open source projects and why it is now a strategic activity in the company.
